HISTORY OF PU XIAN TEMPLE
HISTORY, PAST ,PRESENT AND FUTURE
A. The Smallest Buddhist Temple in the world was founded in AUGUST 1975 , KNOW AS GEM OF THE BUDDHA TEMPLE ( FO POW MEOW) AND LATER RENAMED IT TO PUXIAN TEMPLE OR SAMANTABHADRA VIHARA
Many years back, the founding leader of Pu Xian Temple  formerly know as gem of the Buddha Temple (FO POW MEOW), Bro. Tan Kooi Beng led the youngest independent, non-sectarian Buddhist organisation in Malaysia. He started to spread Buddhism at his age of 15 to some local boys and girls in his village.   By collecting TEN cents each from them, he managed to gather a total of twenty-seven Malaysian ringgit as an activity fund.  Regularly they carried out their prayers and paid homage to the little Buddha statue (about 3 inches) 。In his strive for the Dharma, Bro. Tan felt the need for the change in the approaches of Dharma propagation.  He tirelessly and consistently called for reformation and changes in attitudes and approaches towards Buddhist Missionary works.  The small Buddhist group grew and a proper chanting place was needed.  It all started some 40 years ago, with the concerted efforts from the rest, they built the smallest Buddhist Temple known measuring 10 x 10 feet which accommodate only for four people.  The hard work progressed and they received the acceptance and recognition of others. Many were touched, devotees and the public came forward and continued to donate for the reconstruction of the temple.  With hard work and much dedication, today Pu Xian Temple was rebuilt and well established.  The inspiration of the little 3 inches’ Buddha statue has moved many till today.  Presently, the temple is enshrined with 15 feet bronze Buddha statue weighting 1000 kilograms, the biggest bronze sitting Buddha statue in Penang.  Later, a 15 feet tall standing Buddha statue was erected in the temple.  The exemplary dedications and selflessness of the devotees are highly appreciated.

B. RECONSTRUCTION OF TEMPLE
Being a young and independent organisation Pu Xian Temple faced many difficulties in raising funds. From the sale of book marks, its members managed to raise a sum of 1,200 Malaysia ringgit. With this small amount of money, they began to work on the original site. However, the money raised was only enough to build four pillars. They tried to raise more funds by other means, such as doing odd jobs, providing boating services with their own fishing boats, running bicycle parks, etc and then donated all earnings from their part-time work to the building of the extension. After much effort, the roof was completed and the floor cemented. After 4 months of hard work, the four feet high wall was finally built. This slow progress was due to financial problems. After this, the members really had no way of carrying on their plans for extension. Finally, after about one year, the extensions were completed with the kind and generous donations of philanthropist, Datuk Low Hooi Siah. The building now stands proudly and beautifully in the Jelutong district. It took 360 days, and a great deal more sweat, labour and time of the members who worked voluntarily every night after coming home from work, It must be added that, for the  young leaders in their early teens, who started and had to run this independent organisation with little help from the public, it was certainly a formidable and uphill task. Nevertheless, with their firm determination and grit, they have brought the light of the Dharma to the Jelutong area. The PU XIAN Temple and the association attached to it are so-named to indicate the members' vows and aims to fulfill the ten aspirations of the great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra or Bodhisattva Pu Xian. Hence it is very safe to say that these young boys had created a very unique history of building the smallest Buddhist Temple in the world and to lead the youngest registered Buddhist organization in Malaysia.

conclusion

Through the Dharma propagation programs, bad elements have turned into useful citizens and innocent youth have been prevented from being misled into crimes and drugs abuse. With sincerity and through the guidance of Lord Buddha and Bodhisattvas, the enthusiastic members of the temple have brought the light of the Dharma to the jelutong area. Although they are not well educated, they are hard working and dedicated Buddhists. In the face of administrative and financial difficulties, their young leader had succeeded in leading the group in setting up the temple. Their dedication and selflessness have set a good example for all Buddhists.

IS OUR FUTURE TEMPLE, OUR DREAM

The Way Forward - Our Dream
It is this generation of Buddhists to take upon the noble mission of propagating the Dharma.  With the concerted efforts, together we will grow in the light of Dharma.  There are many challenges ahead and there is a long way to go.   We need your undivided support, co-operation to strengthen ourselves and resolve each problem encountered.  Financial funding is among the major issue of our concern as it relates with the sustainability of our activities.   We foresee a self-generating revenues to sustain our activities will be a plausible solution.  It is our intention to raise a multi-storey temple building in the future.  Besides having a more conducive facility for the temple and Dharma propagating activities, this multi-storey building will also serve as a consistent income generating resources.  The income generated will be able to fund the Pu Xian Temple and Association’s maintenance and activities.  We wish to open this multi-storey building to the use of other Buddhist associations as well.  With strong aspiration, sincere hearts and faith in the Buddhism we are inspired to nurture and purify our young minds.  They will be able to appreciate the harmonious religious relationship in this multicultural society.  Together we will be able to strive for the welfare and benefit of community.

A SIMPLE MESSAGEAAAA

WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO BUILD THIS TEMPLE, I WAS ONLY FIFTEEN YEARS OF AGE AND I WAS ONLY A LAYMAN NOT A MONK.IT WAS AN UPHILL TASK AND I FACE MANY OBSTACLES, I CLEARLY REMEMBER THAT I APPROACHED CERTAIN TEMPLES FOR HELP BUT  WAS TURNED AWAY WITHOUT ANY CONSIDERATION.MAYB THEY THEMSELVES ARE ALSO FINANCIALLY NOT STRONG BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT WELL ORGANISED IN TERMS OF MISSIONARY WORKS.THE BUDDHIST MUST ADMIT THAT IN TERMS OF BOTH MISSIONARY AND SOCIAL WORKS, WE ARE FAR FAR BEHIND OTHERS.HUNDRED AND THOUSANDS OF SO CALLED BUDDHIST HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO OTHER RELIGIONS BUT THE BUDDHIST LEADERS ARE STILL IN THEIR DREAMLAND.WE MUST BE AWAKENED FROM OUR DREAMLAND TO FIND A NEW DIRECTION AND SEEK A BREAKTHROUGH. OTHERWISE BUDDHISM WILL BE IN DANGER,REAL ,REAL DANGER. BUDDHISM IN INDIA , KOREA AND SINGAPORE MUST BE A LESSION TO US TO WORK HARDER AND TO CHANGE OUR METHOD OF PROPAGATING THE DHARMA. BUDDHISTS IN MALAYSIA SHOULD BE SPIRITUALLY, SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY STRONG AND EVEN POLITICALLY INFLUENTIAL, IF WE DESIRE TO SEE OUR RELIGION CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AS A MAJOR RELIGION IN THIS COUNTRY.

I  BELIEVE AND STRONGLY FEEL, THAT IN THE PAST, MANY OF THOSE IN AUTHORITY IN THE BUDDHIST TEMPLES FAILED TO PUT BUDDHISM ABOVE SELF.THEY FAILED TO USE THE POWER AND MEANS GIVEN TO THEM TO SPREAD BUDDHISM WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR ONLY MISSION.INSTEAD THEY SUCCUBED TO PERSONAL GREED, USING THE POWER AND MEANS GIVEN TO THEM TO ENHANCE THEIR PERSONAL POSSESSIONS,EVEN TO THE EXTENT OF ACQUIRING PERSONAL PROPERTIES AND LIVING LUXURIOUS LIVES. ALL DONATIONS TO THE TEMPLES ARE FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE DHARMA  AND NOT FOR PERSONAL GAIN IF WE BELIEVE IN KARMA.

FROM OUR FOUNDING LEADER
BRO K B TAN
